Case Study. 01
Slough Heat and Power
SEGRO benefits from its very own clean, renewable, energy source, in the form of Slough Heat and Power (SH&P), a wholly owned subsidiary of SEGRO Plc. Originally built in the 1920s to ensure that Slough Trading Estate properties were continuously supplied with steam and electricity, SH&P provides the entire Slough Trading Estate (approximately 1 square mile) as well as 2,500 local homes and the local grammar school, with a secure electricity supply – generated on-site from locally sourced biomass, wood and waste.
SH&P is a pioneer of renewable energy. After converting from coal to wood fuel about 5 years ago, SH&P is now the largest renewable-fuelled power station in the UK. The power station avoids emissions of gases causing climate change, while providing markets for local wood-based enterprises and other businesses with non-recyclable materials. Our fully owned subsidiary Fibre Fuel Limited processes non-recyclable paper and card packaging into fuel cubes for use in the power station. |

SH&P generates around 270 GWh of renewable electricity per year, while also supplying useful renewable heat (in the form of hot water and steam).
In 2006 we became even cleaner, through our purchase of three electric Berlingo vans for our utilities infrastructure and maintenance activities around the Slough Trading Estate. The electric vans have enabled us to provide a fast and reliable service to our customers on the Estate, with the added benefit of no emissions, no fuel costs and no road tax.
We recognise that replacing fossil fuel energy sources with renewable ones is essential for combatting climate change and other environmental impacts created by the extraction and processing of energy. Through SH&P we are supporting renewable and efficient energy technology while also reducing our current and future dependency on fossil fuels, and at the same time ensuring a secure, locally-sourced supply. |
